If you're like me and you think that the Superbowl is a colossal waste of time, money and energy, there are all kinds of fun alternatives that will make you look and feel a lot smarter than those who walk like sheep to the Superbowl slaughter.

Have a James Bond marathon - one which includes reading one of the Fleming novels.

Try a double-feature of the Solaris movies. Guaranteed to make your brain feel bigger.

Read and watch everything that has the word "Sagan" attached to it.

Two words - Mythbusters marathon.

Support Pete Townshend and watch TOMMY.

Drag out the Lord of the Rings trilogy - books or movies.

Watch every Star Trek movie with a guy named "Kirk" in it.

Watch your 3 favorite Jeff Bridges movies - one MUST be TRON.

Anything starring Adrienne Barbeau.

How about a Kenneth Branagh Shakespeare marathon?

Superman The Movie, Superman II (the Donner cut) and Superman Returns.

WATCHMEN

Watch all the Buffy episodes that feature Angel and all the Angel episodes that feature Buffy.

Alternate episodes of The Prisoner with episodes of Prison Break.

Watch all the Planet of the Apes movies starting with Escape and witness the circle of life.

The ORIGINAL Star Wars Trilogy

The Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park. You pick the order.

Pick up The Skystone by Jack Whyte and prepare to lose days of your life lost in the sequels.

I, Claudius.

Anything with a Muppet.

And finally - shameless plug - anything written by Lesley Livingston and Adrienne Kress.

I'm sure you can come up with more. In case you hadn't noticed, I'm not a fan of the Superbowl.

Wiil Adrienne come and read her books to me while I work in my studio today?

*the hopeless sounds of dreams shattering*

Alright, Dexter marathon it is then. And now I also have to pick up "I, Claudius", thanks Jon.

Great suggestions, JL. How damn long is this superbowl thing anyway?

I'm reading The Corner by The Wire guys, Light by M. John Harrison and Cosmonaut Keep by Ken MacLeod, *and* the stupid superbowl is not being shown in this house. I'm set.

No water in the apartment. (Grrrrrr!)
Oh well. Sounds like a night out in the town and maybe I’ll bring along some books to read at the coffee shops.
Can’t be too busy out with the “sheep” at home in front of the TV or at the pubs.
(but tomorrow morning will be hell if the water’s still off)

You may all hate the Super Bowel, but I'm drinking beer, eating nachos, and having a Gilmore Girls marathon

Anything starring Adrienne Barbeau.

But Swamp Thing only if it's the R-Rated European Cut. That film is toxic. Only nude Barbeau can make it bearable.

Superman The Movie, Superman II (the Donner cut) and Superman Returns.

I love saying this, because no one ever cares... There's a great fan edit of Superman II. Gets rid of as much Lester as possible, while still filling in or bypassing the unfinished Donner effects shots. Definitely the best version I've seen.

But as for tonight's plans, I'm going for an all-night Equinox fest. Joe's post yesterday got me all worked up for it, but then I had to shovel out the car. (darned blizzards) Both versions of the movie, both commentaries, and the other extras. I might even follow it up with The Sci-Fi Boys, which is the perfect companion piece.

I suppose I should say "Go Colts", since they're my old home town, but really I just don't care about football.

I like to play sports. I don't like to watch them. I've never understood why people would want to. It's like watching someone else have sex...never mind.

A friend and I were talking Branagh Shakespeare last night and I had already made plans to watch Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing tonight! Great minds Jonathan!
